Moving into your first home or flat share?

When you’re moving into your first home or flat share, the lead-up to moving day can be stressful. But, by doing these 5 things, you should feel more relaxed and in control on the big day…

Happy Couple Moved In To Their New Home

1. Make a ‘moving house’ checklist
Write a checklist of everything you need to do, from finalising your move date and buying packing boxes to planning what to do with the kids or your pets. Break up the checklist into time periods (1 month before moving, 1 week before moving, etc.) to give yourself some structure.

2. Work out what you’re taking with you
Moving is the perfect time to go through your belongings, get rid of anything you don’t need and make a list of items you need to buy. If you’re moving in with someone, check which items you can share to avoid duplicating. You could sell anything you don’t need for extra cash for the move. Work out exactly what you’re taking so that you can tell the removals company and they can give you an accurate quote for the move.

3. Book a reputable removals firm
To save yourself the back ache and stress on moving day, book professional help for moving your belongings. Even if you’re only moving from a small apartment or just have a few boxes to shift, a Man & Van service will seriously take the pressure off your move (you don’t have to book a full home removal service). A lot of reputable removals firms offer affordable and flexible Man & Van services and will move your belongings safely and efficiently. To make sure the company you hire is reliable and trustworthy always check their reviews on Checkatrade and Google.

4. Pack your belongings carefully
When you pack your belongings, make sure you use high-quality, heavy-duty boxes, and be wary of overpacking. This will make items easier to lift and avoid the disappointment of things getting broken or damaged. You can find all the packing materials you need in the Burke & Wills Materials Shop. It’s always good to pack carefully (see our packing tips for some ideas) – you’ll definitely thank yourself when it’s time to unpack!

5. Treat yourself after the big move
Moving day is not the time to unpack everything. Once you’ve arrived, do what you need to do and then relax. Get yourself a takeaway and enjoy the first night in your new home.
